Sugar cane is the classical agricultural product of Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat) province. Driving through the countryside, one will be passing sugar cane fields stretching to the horizon.
Why Sugar Cane in Khorat
Sugar cane is a relatively hardy crop accepting stretches of drought and poor ground conditions, as they are quite common on the Khorat Plateau. Additionally, they can be planted quite easily and the harvesting is as uncomplicated.
I myself am not much of a farmer, but I watched the planting of the sugar cane in \"my\" village near Khorat now a number of times and it is always a merry time when the work is finally done.
Sugar Cane Liquor: Saeng Som
One company in Thailand produces a true rum, that is, a distilled liquor made from sugar cane, called Saeng Som. Alcohol content is 40% and the stock is supposedly aged. Pricewise it is hard to beat, however some people I know complain about easy headaches afterwards (especially if mixing with other alcoholic beverages over the evening) -- I had never any problems of this kind.
