Dan Kwian
Attractions,
A Must-bring-home souvenir for all visitors to Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat) is Dan Kwian pottery and earthenware. The villagers of Dan Kwian have long carried their fame for making unique-style pottery from black clay.
Dan Kwian pottery is famous for its rough texture and rust-like hue. Only the clay from this district produces these distinct results. The locals still retain the original and traditional techniques of making pottery and using a type of black clay that is the identity of the area until today.
Tourists will find Dan Kwian nowadays a center of beautiful pottery, offering a variety of exotic designs at a price value-for-money.
Dan Kwian Village
Literally, Dan Kwian means 'bullock cart checkpoint'. The village was so named because it used to be a rest area for caravan traders who travelled in bull carts from Nakhon Ratchasima, to Buriram, Surin and further on to lower Khmer. In the old days, local people of the district made different types of pottery from the clay from the banks of Moon River. All these products were made in great quantity and bartered for food or necessary materials as well as sold in other regions.
