Khorat: experience the real Thailand
However, if you want to see more of the "real" Thailand, Khorat is definitely one of the places you should be visiting. The local Isaan people are among the most friendly and welcoming I ever encountered.
Staying in Khorat does not mean you have to abandon all western civilization. In Khorat City, there are large shopping malls and fast food is available. Going into the surrounding countryside however will be a real experience, especially in regard to eating the famous Thai Isaan food.
Khorat and Khmer temples
Around Khorat, there are also several Khmer temple ruins that actually predate the Angkor Wat complex, the most famous being in Phimai.
Khorat: trekking, biking and birdwatching
Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat) offers also beautiful trekking and biking opportunities in Khao Yai National Park. It is one of the foremost birdwatching spots in the country.
